#1 CRAWLING

It is the process of fetching all the web pages linked to a website. This task is performed by a software called Crawler or Spider , (Google bot  in case of Google).

Such as, Google uses automated programs called spiders or crawlers, just like most search engines. It has a large index of keywords and where those words can be found.

Google uses a trademarked algorithm called Page Rank, which assigns each Web page a relevancy score.

#2 INDEXING

Indexing is a process of creating index for all the fetched web pages & keeping them in a huge database, from when it can be retrieved later. Essentially , the process of indexing is identyfiing the words & expressions that best describe the page & assigning the page to particular keywords.

Processing – When a search request comes, the search engine processes it. It compares the search query in the search request with those indexed pages in the database.

#3 CALCULATING RELEVANCY 

It is natural that while indexing, more than one pages may contain the search query , so the search engine starts calculating the relevancy of each of the pages in its index to the search query.

#4 RETRIEVING RESULTS

The last phase in search engine’s activities is retrieving the best matched results and Simply displaying them in the browser.
